Chapter four: A Light Touch

The slap roused Collin, with fair certainty. Truly, it was rough enough that he flailed a little, his arms seeking to end his torment, waving aimlessly in the air. He heard a voice, deep and slightly gruff seeming, call out with a slight bit of false joviality.

“Whoa there. Save that for the enemy.”

Opening his eyes, all that came to him was that his enemy was Carl. His own older brother. His true tormentor. The man who had sought to use him as a weapon to lash out at a beast that no mere human could have conquered. The same brother who had set Ezola innocent of crimes for all her mind was clearly weakening as they traveled, into the blazing magical fire that was Anders Brolly.

Honestly, they should have gone for Collin’s trick of getting the two married, from the start. The bloodlines worked for that, well enough. It was, perhaps, a trifle on the close side but not so much that it would weaken the line. Anders had seen through that, however. Possibly just judging Ezola as too plain or drawn too thin to make a good mother to his children.

Salina didn’t have that issue. She was a trifle lean, truly, being put to hard magical work on a constant basis since her duties as a future great one demanded such of her. Blinking, he sat up.

“Sorry, Captain Gull. I’ll... See to the evening meal now.” Part of him was annoyed, the man having roused him utilizing rather more force than was needed. His cheeks, on both sides, still stung.

Rather than treat him gently, having pressed himself near death attempting to move that far off man, which had happened only slowly and over a not so far distance, perhaps ten paces, the rough fighter and soldier from Istlan grinned.

“Good thought. You have strength for it?” That was honestly a very fine question.

He actually stopped for a moment, fearing that he’d be weak, having pressed himself that way. Tired or lacking in some magical quality. That might still be the case but truly, he felt a bit worn but only that. Like he’d walked briskly for half a day and ended foot sore but not unable to make camp.

“I should be fine. If not, we can have potage. People will need to eat, even if it isn’t a high banquet.” Oddly, that would still work better.

After doing so much, pressing so hard, with men and women all still doing that, except for Mary, Ezola, and the soldiers, as well as the younger people who weren’t war mages yet, people would both need food and not desire it for a while. So, something pleasant to consume would serve well. A thing of value. Real meat but made more palatable than what the trail might provide.

He felt poorly, walking away, to see to food in the kitchen that had been built for the purpose. As if he should be sending his mind out, to seek the attackers in the distance.
